ARKANSAS HOUSE TO ADJOURN SINE DIE ON MARCH 9
Election Scheduled for Speaker-designate
LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (March 7, 2012) – The Arkansas House of Representatives will adjourn Sine Die at noon on Friday, March 9 for Fiscal Session 2012.
During this Fiscal Session, the Governor has signed 287 acts into law. 153 of the acts originated in the House.
Fifteen minutes after adjournment, members will vote on a Speaker-designate for the 89th General Assembly.
On January 3, a memo was sent to all members eligible to return, advising them of a meeting to be held in the Speaker’s Office for those members seeking the position of Speaker-designate.
Rep. Terry Rice of Waldron and Rep. Darrin Williams of Little Rock attended that meeting and drew for ballot positions.
Before the election takes place, each candidate will be given up to 15 minutes to speak. Members will vote by secret ballot. A candidate must have 51 votes in order to win the election of Speaker-designate.
The Arkansas Speaker of the House presides over the body and is elected by the membership every two years. The Speaker assigns committee leadership and names members to select committees. Other duties include recognizing members to speak on the House floor, preserving order in the House, and certifying all measures passed.
The public is invited to watch the election process live at www.arkansashouse.org.
