Rep. Matthew Shepherd serves as the Speaker of the Arkansas House. He represents District 6, which includes part of Union County. He is serving his 4th term in the House.
In addition to his duties as Speaker, he also serves on the House Judiciary Committee, the House Agriculture, Forestry and Economic Development Committee, Small Business and Economic Development Permanent Subcommittee, Joint Budget Committee, and Joint Committee on Energy.
He served as chair of the Judiciary Committee from 2015 until he was elected Speaker in 2018.. For the 89th General Assembly, he served as chair of the House committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Economic Development.
A native of El Dorado, Rep. Shepherd graduated from El Dorado High School. He earned his bachelor's degree from Ouachita Baptist University and his law degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law. A practicing attorney, he is a member of the El Dorado Rotary Club, the Arkansas Bar Association, the Union County Bar Association, and the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce.
Rep. Shepherd and his wife, Alie, have three young children and reside in El Dorado.
